Have you ever heard of FLUTD? 🐱💭

This acronym refers to a set of diseases affecting the feline lower urinary tract, which includes the bladder and urethra.

Among the most common causes are:
🔹 Feline Idiopathic Cystitis (FIC)
🔹 Urolithiasis ("stone" formation in the bladder)
🔹 Bacterial urinary tract infections, which are less common in young, healthy cats (less than 3%) but can occur more frequently in older cats or those with other diseases (comorbidities).

The challenge is that many of these conditions present similar clinical signs (symptoms), making diagnosis essential through a thorough clinical evaluation and laboratory tests (with an emphasis on urinalysis) and imaging.

⚠ Watch out for these signs:
🚽 Difficulty or straining to urinate
🩸 Bloody urine
🚫 Urinating outside the litter box
🔁 Frequent trips to the litter box and urinating in small amounts

These signs may indicate that something is wrong and require prompt veterinary evaluation.

💡 To help with early detection of these problems, a simple but very effective tip is to use light-colored cat litter. Light-colored litter makes it easier to spot blood or other changes in the urine that might go unnoticed in colored or dark litter. Additionally, the litter should form firm clumps when it comes into contact with urine, making it easier to perceive the volume. Observing if the cat is urinating little, a lot, or differently can be an important alert, as changes in volume can also indicate problems in the urinary tract.
